Endress+Hauser Gammapilot FMG50 – Reliable Radiometric Measurement for Extreme Process Conditions

The Gammapilot FMG50 is a compact radiometric transmitter designed for non-contact point level detection, continuous level measurement, interface measurement and density measurement in liquids, solids, suspensions and sludges. It provides a reliable measurement solution for applications where conventional sensors cannot operate due to extreme temperature, pressure, corrosion, abrasion or highly viscous media.

Using proven radiometric measuring technology, the FMG50 measures through the vessel wall without direct contact with the process medium, making it ideal for reactors, autoclaves, separators, acid tanks and other demanding process equipment.

Measurement Without Process Contact

Unlike conventional level instruments that require contact with the medium, the Gammapilot FMG50 is installed externally on the vessel.

The measurement is based on the absorption of gamma radiation as it passes through the process medium. Changes in radiation intensity allow the transmitter to determine level, interface position or density with high reliability.

Key performance:

  • Measuring principle: Radiometric measurement

  • Applications:

    Continuous level measurement

    Point level detection

    Interface measurement

    Density measurement

  • Measurement range: Unlimited measuring range with cascade configuration

  • Accuracy: ±1%

  • Process contact: Non-contact

  • Power supply: 2-wire loop powered

  • Ambient temperature: –40 to +80 °C

  • Housing options: 316L stainless steel / aluminum

  • Communication: HART, Bluetooth commissioning via SmartBlue App

  • Safety: SIL 2/3 according to IEC 61508

Designed for the Most Challenging Process Conditions

Many industrial measurement applications involve conditions where radar, ultrasonic or mechanical level instruments may struggle.

The FMG50 provides reliable measurement even when processes involve:

  • Extreme temperatures

  • High pressure

  • Corrosive chemicals

  • Abrasive materials

  • High viscosity media

  • Toxic or hazardous substances

Because the sensor remains outside the process, the instrument is protected from direct exposure to aggressive media, helping improve service life and reduce maintenance requirements.

One Transmitter for Multiple Measurement Tasks

The Gammapilot FMG50 is not limited to level measurement. With suitable configuration, it can perform several important process measurement tasks:

Continuous Level Measurement

Provides reliable level measurement for vessels containing liquids, solids, powders or slurries, especially where direct contact sensors are unsuitable.

Point Level Detection

Used for high-level or low-level switching applications, helping prevent overfilling or dry running.

Interface Measurement

Detects the boundary between two different media, such as:

  • Liquid / liquid interface

  • Liquid / solid interface

  • Emulsion layers

Density Measurement

Measures density changes in liquids, suspensions and slurries for process monitoring and quality control.

Compact 2-Wire Design for Simplified Installation

The FMG50 is designed as a true 2-wire loop-powered compact transmitter, reducing engineering effort and simplifying installation.

Advantages include:

  • Reduced wiring requirements

  • Easier integration into existing control systems

  • Compact installation concept

  • Lower maintenance workload

Bluetooth commissioning with the SmartBlue App allows convenient parameter configuration and device diagnostics without opening the instrument housing.

Reliable Solution for Large Vessels and Difficult Applications

With radiometric measurement, the vessel size and process conditions are no longer major limitations.

The FMG50 is suitable for:

  • Chemical reactors

  • Petrochemical equipment

  • Oil & gas processing

  • Mining slurry systems

  • Power generation

  • Cement production

  • Pharmaceutical processes

  • Food and beverage applications

Typical installation locations include:

  • Reactors

  • Autoclaves

  • Separators

  • Storage tanks

  • Cyclones

  • High-pressure process vessels

Safety and Diagnostic Functions

The Gammapilot FMG50 integrates advanced diagnostic functions to support safe operation in critical processes.

Important features include:

  • Heartbeat Technology

  • SIL 2/3 safety capability

  • Overfill prevention according to WHG

  • International explosion protection approvals

These functions help operators improve plant availability while maintaining high safety standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Endress+Hauser Gammapilot FMG50 used for?

The FMG50 is used for non-contact point level detection, continuous level measurement, interface measurement and density measurement in liquids, solids, suspensions and sludges.

Why choose radiometric measurement instead of radar or ultrasonic measurement?

Radiometric measurement is especially suitable for extreme applications where high temperature, high pressure, corrosive media or difficult process conditions make traditional level technologies unsuitable.

Does Gammapilot FMG50 contact the process medium?

No. The transmitter is installed externally and performs measurement through the vessel wall without contact with the process material.

Can FMG50 measure density?

Yes. The FMG50 supports density measurement for liquids, suspensions and sludges when configured with suitable accessories.

What industries use Gammapilot FMG50?

It is widely used in chemical, oil & gas, mining, power, pharmaceutical and other industries requiring reliable measurement under extreme process conditions.

What makes FMG50 different from traditional level transmitters?

Its non-contact radiometric technology allows reliable measurement even when the process medium is corrosive, abrasive, toxic or under extreme pressure and temperature conditions.
