Endress+Hauser CNGmass DCI CNG Coriolis Flowmeter

The Endress+Hauser CNGmass DCI is a specialized Coriolis mass flowmeter for compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling applications. It is designed for accurate measurement of CNG during high-pressure natural gas refueling and can display the measured gas quantity directly on site.

Unlike conventional volumetric flowmeters, the CNGmass DCI uses the Coriolis measuring principle to directly measure mass flow. The measurement is largely independent of physical fluid properties such as viscosity and density, making it well suited for demanding CNG dispensing applications.

CNG Mass Flow Measurement

The CNGmass DCI is specifically designed for compressed natural gas measurement in high-pressure refueling systems.

It supports flow rates up to:

150 kg/min (330 lb/min)

with a maximum mass flow measurement error of:

±0.5% of batch.

This makes the instrument suitable for applications where accurate measurement of the quantity of CNG delivered during a refueling operation is important.

High-Pressure CNG Refueling

The CNGmass DCI is designed for demanding high-pressure gas applications and supports a maximum process pressure of:

350 bar (5080 psi).

This high pressure capability makes the flowmeter suitable for CNG filling stations, natural gas vehicle refueling systems and other high-pressure CNG dispensing applications.

A rupture disc is also available as an option to provide additional protection for high-pressure applications.

Coriolis Measuring Principle

The CNGmass DCI uses Coriolis mass flow measurement to determine the mass flow of compressed natural gas.

The measuring principle provides several advantages for CNG applications:

  • Direct mass flow measurement

  • Measurement largely independent of fluid density and viscosity

  • Simultaneous measurement of multiple process variables

  • No inlet or outlet straight-run requirements

  • Reliable measurement under high-pressure conditions

The instrument can measure mass flow, density, temperature, volume flow, corrected volume flow and reference density.

Space-Saving Installation

The CNGmass DCI has a compact design and does not require inlet or outlet straight pipe runs.

This allows the meter to be installed in compact CNG refueling systems where available installation space is limited.

The nominal diameter range is:

DN 8 to DN 25 (3/8" to 1").

Custody Transfer Measurement

The CNGmass DCI transmitter is available for custody transfer applications, making the instrument suitable for systems where the measured quantity of CNG is used for commercial transaction or billing purposes.

The device can also be supplied with calibration performed at accredited calibration facilities according to ISO/IEC 17025, supporting applications with higher metrological requirements.

On-Site CNG Quantity Display

The measured CNG quantity can be displayed directly on site.

The transmitter features a:

4-line backlit display with Touch Control

and can be operated externally, allowing users to access the instrument without opening the transmitter housing.

This is particularly useful for CNG dispensing systems where operators need immediate access to measurement information.

Flexible Communication

The CNGmass DCI provides flexible communication and output options for integration into CNG dispensing and control systems.

Available digital communication includes:

  • HART

  • Modbus RS485

The transmitter also provides modular outputs including:

  • 4–20 mA

  • 0–20 mA

  • Pulse output

  • Frequency output

  • Switch output

  • Relay output

This allows the flowmeter to be integrated with fuel dispensers, PLC systems, control systems and data acquisition equipment.

Compact Transmitter Design

The CNGmass DCI features a robust, ultra-compact transmitter housing and can be supplied in either a compact or remote version.

Preconfigured device options also support faster commissioning and reduce setup effort during installation.

The transmitter provides automatic recovery of data for servicing, helping simplify maintenance and troubleshooting.

Wide Temperature Range

The CNGmass DCI supports a medium temperature range of:

-50 to +150 °C (-58 to +302 °F).

The standard ambient temperature range is:

-20 to +60 °C

with an optional range down to:

-40 to +60 °C.

Robust Wetted Materials

The measuring tube is manufactured from:

1.4435 (316L) stainless steel

while the process connection uses:

1.4404 (316) stainless steel.

The sensor housing is made from corrosion-resistant 1.4301 (304) stainless steel, while the transmitter housing uses powder-coated die-cast aluminum.

Hazardous Area Applications

Depending on the selected configuration, the CNGmass DCI is available with hazardous-area approvals including:

  • ATEX

  • IECEx

  • NEPSI

  • JPN Ex

This makes it suitable for use in appropriately classified CNG and natural gas installations.
